The latest amendment to Poland's "Work-free days act" was proposed by the Left. Earlier this year it was passed in parliament, and now the Polish President approved it - officially making Christmas Eve a day off from 2025, and introducing an additional shopping Sunday in December instead.
Until now, shops in Poland were open on two Sundays preceding Christmas. However, from 2025, there will be three so-called "shopping Sundays" in December. The act states that any store employee can only work on two of them, though.
The head of the President's Chancellery, Małgorzata Paprocka, told Polish Radio that the president also decided to refer the act to the Constitutional Tribunal in the follow-up review mode - as adding the third working Sunday in December, as well as some other changes, are introduced by the act without public consultation.
The head of the Presidential Chancellery stressed, however, that the president has no doubts about the work-free Christmas Eve itself - and this aspect of the act will not be subject to follow-up review.
The act will enter into force on February 1, 2025.
