The announcement was made by Włodzimierz Czarzasty, a leader of the New Left group, a junior partner in the government coalition.

Czarzasty, a prominent left-wing politician and deputy Speaker of the lower house, told reporters on Tuesday that Kulasek's nomination was based on a government coalition agreement and consultations with Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

"Following agreements within the government coalition ... we recommend Marcin Kulasek to take over as minister of science," Czarzasty said.

Kulasek, currently a deputy minister for state assets, is set to replace fellow left-wing politician Dariusz Wieczorek, who resigned on December 19 amid allegations of nepotism and other unethical practices, state news agency PAP reported.
