'Should the EU be just a free trade zone or a power that can stand up to Putin?' asks FM Sikorski

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has challenged those who criticize Europe's lack of strategic strength to make a clear decision about the EU's future: should it remain a free trade bloc, or should it become a geopolitical power capable of defending itself?

"Those who complain about Europe's lack of resolve must decide - should the EU be just a free trade zone or a power capable of standing up to Putin?" Sikorski wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

"Free trade zones do not have defense capabilities," he added, stressing that economic cooperation alone cannot ensure security against external threats.

His remarks echo statements by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who, before heading to a European Council summit, highlighted that the EU is finalizing one of its most significant projects in decades - the creation of "a secure, armed, and united Europe in the face of the Russian threat."

To emphasize the real-world impact of Europe's defense policy, Sikorski shared a post by activist Jan Mencwel featuring a striking image of a young Ukrainian girl visiting her father on the front lines. The image serves as a reminder that Europe's response to security challenges has direct human consequences.

With this appeal, Sikorski sends a clear message to those who question Europe's military strength: the EU cannot afford to remain passive. It must take decisive action to bolster its defense capabilities and ensure long-term security.
