The spokesman, Jacek Dobrzyński, announced the arrest on social media, identifying the suspect as "a 47-year-old Ukrainian citizen working for Russian intelligence" in Poland's central Mazowieckie region.

"The man was conducting reconnaissance of military facilities in Poland," Dobrzyński said on the X messaging platform, formerly known as Twitter.

He added that the suspect cited "ideological motives for his activities, resulting from his ties with Russia."

The man has been "charged with participating in the activities of the Russian intelligence service against Poland" and was placed in pretrial custody for three months following a court order, according to Dobrzyński.

The case is being investigated by Poland's National Public Prosecutor's Office, he wrote.

Since the start of the war in Ukraine, 44 people have been detained in Poland on suspicion of spying for Russia or Belarus. The suspects include citizens of Belarus, Russia, Ukraine and Poland, Dobrzyński also said.
