The demonstration is expected to start around noon outside the Polish parliament and is being organized by six of the country’s largest trade unions representing the steel sector.
Union leaders argue that the sector is on the brink of collapse due to the EU’s climate policy and a surge in cheap steel imports from outside the European Union.
"The steel industry may not survive until the end of the year under the current economic conditions," said Dominik Kolorz, head of the Silesian-Dąbrowa chapter of the Solidarity trade union, in an interview with regional broadcaster Radio Katowice.
Protesters plan to deliver a petition to Prime Minister Donald Tusk, calling for the suspension of the EU's Green Deal in its current form, a cap on energy prices for steel producers at EUR 60 per megawatt-hour, and a ban on imports of steel from non-EU countries that do not follow environmental regulations.
The unions also demand that the domestic steel industry be included in Poland’s national defense armament programs.
