Sniffer dog helps Polish border guards seize marijuana haul at Warsaw airport

Polish Border Guard officers at Warsaw's Chopin Airport have seized more than 82 kg of marijuana from a cargo shipment from Canada, with help from a drug-sniffing dog, the Border Guard headquarters said on Tuesday.

The sniffer dog, named Drops and trained to detect drugs, helped officers locate the marijuana, which was concealed inside specially modified metal cylinders converted into hidden compartments.

The drugs had an estimated street value of around PLN 4 million (EUR 920,000), officials said.

According to shipping documents, the cargo was destined for Germany and was supposed to contain industrial equipment. It consisted of two wooden crates containing equipment described as compressors.

During the inspection, Drops indicated an area where drugs could potentially be hidden, prompting officers to examine the contents of the crates more closely.

Officers also noticed signs that the equipment had been tampered with, including welded fastening screws that could not be unscrewed.

The cylinders contained packages of dried plant material, which tests confirmed was marijuana.

Officers from the Warsaw-Okęcie Border Guard post are conducting an investigation under the supervision of the Warsaw-Ochota District Prosecutor's Office, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
