Work on Poland's new medical data safety regulations began at the Digital Affairs ministry, following several massive leaks of confidential information of the kind. The country's Deputy Prime Minister and Digital Affairs Minister, Krzysztof Gawkowski, announced this on Polish Radio on Saturday.
According to the head of the Ministry of Digital Affairs, the new rules will make companies bear greater responsibility for data, and patients will be better informed about how their data is used.
"Certification for companies processing medical data will be strengthened. Companies processing records for more than 100,000 individuals will be required to meet additional security standards. We also want data regarding incidents - whether involving a disclosure by the company or a failure to secure the data - to be reported automatically"
- Krzysztof Gawkowski explained.
The Minister also acknowledged that the recent massive data leaks, which happened at companies processing medical data of more than a half of the Polish population in total, had exposed vastly inadequate security.
"We cannot afford to wait. We need to strengthen cybersecurity standards so that every private company understands its responsibility for the patient data it processes - and, above all, recognizes the need to invest in protecting it"
