Sikorski said Poland should not boycott the G20 summit because Putin has been invited, although he described the invitation to the Russian president as a bad idea.
He argued that Putin should not be treated as a welcome guest while Russia is waging war against Ukraine.
He also said Poland’s participation in the G20 would not mean it was helping to end Putin’s isolation, noting that Poland is not hosting the summit.
The G20 summit will take place in Miami on December 14-15, hosted by US President Donald Trump. Poland will be represented by President Karol Nawrocki.
Polish Defence Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said Nawrocki should participate in the G20 meeting but have no contact with Putin.
"President Nawrocki should fly to the G20 and have no contact ... because in such a situation there is nothing to discuss with Putin,” Kosiniak-Kamysz said.
Presidential minister Marcin Przydacz previously said Poland did not like the decision to invite Putin, but Nawrocki planned to attend because participation in the G20 was in Poland's interest.
Przydacz also said he did not expect any interaction between Nawrocki and Putin if the Russian president attends.
Sikorski described Poland's invitation to the summit as a success. He said a similar issue arose when Finance and Economy Minister Andrzej Domański on Wednesday attended a meeting of G20 economic ministers in Milwaukee, where the Russian minister did not take part in the "family photo."
Presidential spokesman Rafał Leśkiewicz said he could not imagine Nawrocki appearing in a joint photograph with Putin or having any other interaction with him.
Leśkiewicz noted that Poland has been invited to join the G20 for the first time, describing this as the result of efforts by generations of Poles.
