Cash for kids from Polish fundraiser named after US ex-president

Children from orphanages and poor families in southern Poland are set to benefit from a fundraiser named after a former US president.

The Hoover Table fundraising drive, which got under way in the southern Polish city of Kraków this month, encourages restaurateurs and entrepreneurs to allocate part of their profits to support children from childcare facilities and families at risk of poverty, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency has reported.

The annual campaign is a throwback to a 1920 initiative by US President Herbert Hoover, who hosted special charity dinners to raise money for Polish children in the aftermath of World War I.

The Hoover Table charity effort in Kraków is now in its second year. It runs until the end of September.

Last year, the campaign raised PLN 60,000 (EUR 13,800, USD 15,300), enabling some 30 children from childcare centres to go to summer language camps, the IAR news agency reported.
