The move was announced after Poland and the United States last month signed a major defence cooperation deal to station 1,000 extra American troops in this country.
That agreement was long sought by Poland, a staunch US military ally fearful of Russia. Around 4,500 American troops were already stationed in Poland on a rotating basis.
Polish President Andrzej Duda said at the time that the deal between the two countries "takes us to the next, even more strengthened stage of defence and military cooperation."
Amid fears of Russian aggression, the authorities in Warsaw have been making intense efforts to secure boosted US troop numbers in Poland, which lies on the eastern flank of NATO.
Announcing that Poznań would host the Fifth Corps HQ forward command post, the US embassy in Warsaw said in a Twitter post on Wednesday that American troops would arrive in the Polish city in October.
The U.S. Army in Europe said in a statement: “The primary mission of the new forward headquarters will be to conduct operational planning, mission command and oversight of the rotational forces in Europe.
“It will also provide additional capability to support allies and partners in the region,” the statement added.
'Strong relationship'
Lt. Gen. John. S. Kolasheski, the Fifth Corps commanding general, was quoted as saying: “We have a strong relationship with our Polish allies and appreciate the outstanding support they provide to our rotational soldiers.”
He added: “As we stand up the V Corps forward command post in Poznań we look forward to strengthening that relationship as we work together to build readiness and enhance interoperability between our militaries and those of our allies and partners.”
Following Moscow's annexation of the Crimea region of Ukraine in 2014, NATO decided at a Warsaw summit in July 2016 to deploy four rotating multinational battalions to Poland and the Baltic states.
