Power lines were downed by the weight of snow on them and transformer stations were damaged, state news agency PAP reported.

Meanwhile, motorists in the region faced tough conditions. Dozens of truck drivers on Monday found themselves stuck on steeper sections of road, public broadcaster Polish Radio reported.

Police warned that conditions were “very dangerous.”

The last week of January has seen heavy snowfall in the east of the country. Blizzards are likely in the days ahead, with temperatures set to drop to minus 10° Celsius in some areas.

Forecasters have warned that snow and icy conditions can be expected across Poland.
