A total of 14 horses, bred at sites including the famed state-run stud farm in Janów Podlaski, were sold at the annual auction on Sunday.
An 11-year-old stallion named Equator and nine-year-old mare Emandorissa, both bred at Michałów, another well-known farm in Poland, fetched the highest price of EUR 450,000 each. Equator was bought by a buyer from Saudi Arabia, while Emandorissa was sold to a bidder from Qatar.
Another high bid was EUR 250,000 for mare Brodnica from Janów Podlaski.
The auction was “a success of Polish Arabian horse breeding,” Agriculture Minister Grzegorz Puda said, as quoted by state news agency PAP.
"Horse breeding is our national pride,” he added.
Last year, 10 of 21 horses put up for sale changed hands. The auction fetched a total of EUR 1,587,000. The most expensive horse then was a mare called Perfinka, which fetched EUR 1.25 million.
A record EUR 1.4 million was paid in 2015 for 10-year-old mare Pepita, with the auction bringing in a combined EUR 4 million.
