Poland reports 2,523 new coronavirus cases, one more death

Poland on Sunday reported 2,523 new coronavirus infections and one more death related to COVID-19, bringing the country's total number of cases during the pandemic to 2,939,590 and fatalities to 76,112.

Of the new cases confirmed on Sundaythe most—573—were in the eastern province of Lubelskie, which has one of the lowest vaccination rates in the country.

The latest death in Poland’s coronavirus outbreak is one person with pre-existing medical conditions, the health ministry said.

On Saturday, Poland confirmed 44 deaths and 3,236 new coronavirus infections nationwide, compared with 49 deaths and 2,771 fresh cases a day earlier.

On April 8the country reported its highest daily toll of 954 deaths related to the coronavirus.

On April 1, the Polish health ministry confirmed 35,251 new single-day cases, the most since the pandemic hit the country early last year.

Poland's first case of coronavirus infection was reported on March 4, 2020.

3,077 in hospitals, 116,255 quarantined

The Polish health ministry announced on Sunday morning that 3,077 COVID-19 patients were in hospitals nationwide, 282 of them on ventilators, with a further 116,255 people quarantined for possible coronavirus exposure.

Meanwhile, 2,675,821 people have now recovered from COVID-19 throughout the country, the health ministry also said.

Officials have warned that the number of COVID-19 infections in the country could rise in the weeks ahead as the Delta variant of the coronavirus begins to spread more quickly.

Health Minister Adam Niedzielski said at the end of last month that the fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic was expected to reach its height in Poland in November or December, with up to 40,000 daily cases.
