Kaczyński made the announcement in an interview with Polish state news agency PAP on Tuesday.

“As of now I am no longer in government,” he said.

“I have tendered my resignation and Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has accepted it," he added. "As far as I know, President Andrzej Duda has signed it as well."

Kaczyński said that during his 20 months in government he helped make some "key decisions to make sure Poland avoids a very difficult fate.”

He added: "We want to arm ourselves to such an extent that a potential attack on Poland would be a totally irrational undertaking."

Kaczyński said he would have resigned four months earlier if the war in Ukraine had not broken out.

In October 2021, he announced he would be stepping down from the Cabinet at the start of 2022.

He told PAP on Tuesday he would now focus on preparing his party for the next parliamentary elections.

“For Law and Justice, a good result means winning these elections and being in power, naturally as part of the United Right coalition,” Kaczyński said.

He had served in the government since October 2020. He was deputy prime minister in charge of national security.

Kaczyński said in the interview that Defence Minister Mariusz Błaszczak would replace him in his role as a deputy prime minister.

Tuesday is day 118 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
