Sunday is seeing the beginning of an annual UN-wide conference within the framework of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Held in the Egyptian resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh, the COP27 summit will pivot around issues related to combating global warming.
The conference will play host to about 100 heads of state and government, including Polish President Andrzej Duda.
Polish Ambassador to the UN, Krzysztof Szczerski, underlined that the conference is taking place at a “watershed moment” amid “multiple crises happening simultaneously.”
He listed Russia-inflicted security crisis, inflation-related economic crisis, food crisis and energy crisis and said they are all “aggravated” by climate change.
Polish president's top foreign policy aide, Jakub Kumoch, highlighted that “Poland treats the matter of countering climate change seriously.”
The official also announced that President Duda will speak at the forum, as well as he’ll take part in several panel sessions, including one concerning water access for poor countries.
COP27 will run for two weeks and will be concluded by adoption of new climate-preserving objectives.
The United Nations expects its member countries to ramp up their efforts in order to keep the climate-related promises they made at last year’s conference in Glasgow.
Out of 193 states that pledged to take action targeted at limiting their negative impact on climate, merely 26 met their environmental goals.
