In the debate, politicians from six different groups seeking parliamentary seats fielded questions from anchors, while also locking horns over topics such as security, migration, the retirement age, unemployment, privatisation and social policy.

The 60-minute debate was aired by state broadcaster TVP on Monday evening.

It featured Poland's conservative Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, centrist opposition leader Donald Tusk, leftist MP Joanna Scheuring-Wielgus, centre-right politician Szymon Hołownia, far-right lawmaker Krzysztof Bosak, and regional politician Krzysztof Maj.

The debate came as Poland’s political parties step up their campaigns ahead of elections scheduled for October 15.

With election day fast approaching, the country’s ruling conservatives appear to be running ahead of an opposition divided into separate blocs, according to most recent polls.

But if they win the election, the governing conservatives may not be able to form a majority in parliament on their own.

Poles will head to the ballot box to vote in parliamentary elections on Sunday. They will elect 460 MPs and 100 senators for a four-year term.

The governing conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party, allied with two smaller groupings in a United Right coalition, is seeking a third term in power after a convincing win in 2019 and a landslide in 2015.

Sixty-eight percent of respondents to a recent survey said they intended to vote in the upcoming ballot.

Poland's largest opposition bloc, the Civic Coalition (KO), last month won a mock election held in the central town of Wieruszów to measure voter sentiment ahead of the real ballot.

Poland’s ruling conservatives have promised to bring in a raft of new policies if they retain power.
