The lower house of Poland's bicameral parliament, the Sejm, opened its inaugural session at noon, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

Senior lawmaker Marek Sawicki, a former agriculture minister, presided over the house floor and the chamber was packed with officials and diplomats, state news agency PAP reported.

The sitting began with Duda's address to MPs and the nation.

Members of the new Sejm then took the oath and were later expected to elect their Speaker.

The current prime minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, was expected to tender his Cabinet's resignation.

The Polish president said at the start of last week that he would entrust Morawiecki with the mission of forming a new government.

Meanwhile, the Polish upper house, the Senate, was set to meet for its first session at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

Duda was scheduled to address the new senators.

Poles elected a new set of 460 MPs and 100 senators when they went to the ballot box last month.

Morawiecki's ruling conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party won Poland's October 15 election, but failed to secure a parliamentary majority, increasing the likelihood of an opposition government.

Poland's pro-European opposition groups on Friday signed an agreement to form a coalition government following last month's elections, pledging to restore the rule of law, promote green energy and relax abortion rules, among other policies.
