Speaking during a re-election campaign event on Sunday, Trzaskowski urged voters to turn out in large numbers to exercise their right to elect their local representatives.

Trzaskowski, a senior politician with the liberal Civic Platform (PO) party, is seeking to stay on as mayor of the Polish capital, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

"These elections are of fundamental importance," Trzaskowski told supporters. "The local government must be strong because it makes decisions that are closest to citizens," he added.

Poles will head to the ballot box to vote in local government elections on April 7.

The second round of voting for mayors, aldermen and other local government officials will be held on April 21.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk, leader of the ruling Civic Platform party, told reporters in mid-January that the April elections would be a crucial vote to choose city mayors and provincial and county administration leaders.

“I hope that April will prove to be a good month for Poland's local government activists,” Tusk said at the time.

The ballot will test the government's support just six months after a coalition of pro-European parties led by Tusk won parliamentary electionsnews agencies reported.

Meanwhile, Poland’s elections to the European Parliament will take place on June 9, under a decision signed by President Andrzej Duda.

Around the EU, voting to select a new batch of MEPs will take place between June 6 and 9, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

The European ballot will be the third in an electoral marathon in Poland, following national parliamentary elections last autumn and local elections scheduled for next month.

The European Parliament is the directly elected parliamentary institution of the European Union, of which Poland has been a member since 2004.

Poles will go to the ballot box in June to elect 53 MEPs, the PAP news agency reported.
