Trzaskowski, a candidate backed by the governing Civic Coalition (KO), won a decisive, first-round victory in the race for a second term as mayor of the Polish capital, after garnering 57.41 percent of the vote, the commission said.

Meanwhile, his conservative rival Tobiasz Bocheński scored 23.1 percent, and leftist contender Małgorzata Bejat won 12.86 percent, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported

Some pre-election surveys had suggested the battle for Warsaw would need to go to a second round.

A total of 444,006 Varsovians cast their ballots to support Trzaskowski, while 254,324 voted for Bocheński, the commission said.

Voter turnout in Warsaw was 66.59 percent, the commission announced.

The opposition conservatives won the most vote in elections to regional assemblies, but were outdistanced by the government coalition in most major cities, including Gdańsk, Łódź and Katowice, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

Mayoral races in several other cities, including the southern city of Kraków, were inconclusive and going into run-offs.

A second round of voting, where needed, will be held on April 21.

Run-offs between the two most popular mayoral contenders will take place where the winning candidate failed to garner more than 50 percent of the vote in the first round.

'A significant triumph for democratic Poland': PM

Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk has hailed a collective triumph for pro-European Union democratic parties in his country's local elections.

In a statement after exit poll findings were released on Sunday night, Tusk praised Trzaskowski for confirming his status as a leading figure in Poland's democratic local governance.

"Rafał has confirmed that he is the leader of democratic local government in Poland, achieving a spectacular result," Tusk said, emphasizing the significance of Trzaskowski's victory for his government four months after a closely-fought parliamentary election and two months before European Parliament elections.

"Today, we celebrate a significant triumph for democratic Poland," Tusk told supporters, as quoted by state news agency PAP. "Rafał Trzaskowski's remarkable victory in Warsaw underscores our shared commitment to a future shaped by hope, respect and responsibility."

Tusk described the local election results as "a reinforcement of the democratic mandate" for his pro-EU coalition, which came to power after parliamentary elections last October.

"This repetition of our success from October in the April elections marks a determined stride forward in our journey towards a prosperous, inclusive Poland," he declared.

Tusk's ruling liberal Civic Coalition (KO) group came second in Poland’s local government elections on Sunday, after being outperformed by the opposition conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party, according to the National Electoral Commission.

The Eurosceptic PiS party, which governed the country from 2015 until late last year, won 34.27 percent of the vote in elections to regional assemblies, vs. 30.59 percent for the pro-European Civic Coalition, the National Electoral Commission announced on its website late on Monday.

The centre-right Third Way group, a junior government coalition partner, finished third with 14.25 percent, according to the National Electoral Commission.

The far-right opposition Confederation group was fourth, with 7.23 percent.

The Left party, another member of the governing coalition, came in fifth, gaining 6.32 percent.

Other parties trailed far behind, with voter turnout at 51.93 percent, the commission reported.

'A milestone against the populist tide'

Trzaskowski has described his re-election as "a milestone against the populist tide" led by the PiS party.

"This victory is more than a personal achievement; it's a clear message that Poland aspires to be a nation of openness, tolerance and European values," Trzaskowski said.

Poles on Sunday headed to the ballot box to elect nearly 47,000 aldermen and more than 2,500 mayors and other officials as local government elections were held across the country.

Sunday’s ballot came ahead of European elections scheduled in Poland for June 9 and presidential elections next year.
