UPDATE: Polish Paralympic athletes win 23 medals in Paris

Polish athletes won 23 medals—eight gold, six silver and nine bronze—at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Summer Games, which ended in the French capital on Sunday.

The tally placed Poland 16th in the overall medals table.

China finished top of the standings, with 220 medals, 94 gold, 76 silver and 50 bronze. Britain placed second, with 124 medals, 49 gold, 44 silver and 31 bronze, ahead of the United States in third place, with 105 medals: 36 gold, 42 silver and 27 bronze.

A contingent of 84 Polish athletes, comprising 43 men and 41 women, competed at the Paris Paralympics, which took place from August 28 to September 8.

Poland was represented by athletes competing in 15 sports, including para-athletics, swimming, table tennis, weightlifting and kayaking.

Four of the eight gold medals for Poland came from table tennis, two from para-athletics and two from swimming.

On Saturday, September 7, the penultimate day of action in Paris, Polish table tennis player Karolina Pęk won the Class 9 women's singles final, after defeating Guiyan Hiong of China 3-2 (11-7, 2-11, 4-11, 13-11, 11-8), public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

Class 9 is for players with a mild impairment that affects the legs or playing arm, according to the International Olympic Committee.

Meanwhile, Rafał Czuper became Paralympic champion in the men's Class 2 singles for players with no sitting balance and a mildly affected playing arm.

 

Patryk Chojnowski clinched two golds for Poland at the Games, claiming the Class 10 men's singles title and winning the doubles together with teammate Piotr Grudzień.

In the singles, Chojnowski defeated China's Hao Lian 3-2 in the final to defend his title from the London and Tokyo Paralympics

Polish track-and-field athletes contributed two gold medals.

Karolina Kucharczyk became Paralympic champion in the women's T20 long jump for track athletes with an intellectual impairment, with a best effort of 5.82 metres.

She won her third Paralympic gold in Paris, defending her title from Tokyo in 2021.

Kucharczyk previously triumphed in the event at the London Paralympics in 2012, and she also won silver in 2016 at Rio de Janeiro.

Runner Barbara Bieganowska-Zając took the gold in the T20 women's 1500 metres, winning her fifth Paralympic gold.

Swimmer Kamil Otowski earned two gold medals for Poland in Paris, winning the men's 50m and 100m backstroke Class S1 events for competitors with spinal cord injuries.

More than 4,400 competitors from around the world took part in the global multi-sport event in France, which celebrated the sporting talent of athletes with various impairments.

Public broadcaster Polish Radio was a media partner of the Polish team at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Summer Games.

Team Poland won 24 medals, seven gold, six silver and 11 bronze, and finished 17th in the overall medal standings at the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo.

Poland scooped 39 medals and finished 10th in the medals table at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro.

The next Paralympic Summer Games will be held in Los Angeles in 2028.
