During the operation on Inżynierska Street in the Praga Północ district of the capital, one of the officers discharged their service weapon, resulting in another officer being injured.
"Despite the immediate response of paramedics and the dedicated efforts of rescue teams and doctors, we were unable to save our officer," the Warsaw Metropolitan Police announced on social media.
"We share with deep sorrow the tragic news of today's incident on Inżynierska Street in Warsaw's Praga Północ. During the intervention, one of the participating officers was injured by gunfire," confirmed an official statement.
According to a report from Polish Radio, a local resident recounted that the agitated man was restrained on the ground and screamed that he should not be taken away, fearing for his life.
The Warsaw Medical Rescue Service "Meditrans" confirmed that three ambulances were dispatched to the scene. The street where the incident occurred was cordoned off.
