The meeting took place on Thursday, a day before Duda's visit to Lithuania.

Nawrocki, who heads the state-run Institute of National Remembrance (IPN), describes himself as an independent contender despite receiving the endorsement from the nationalist-populist PiS party last month.

Duda told reporters on Friday that he felt an ideological affinity with Nawrocki.

"As a presidential candidate, he promotes ideals that are close to my heart," Duda said.

Nawrocki on Thursday shared a social media post about the meeting.

On the same day, Poland's Internal Security Agency (ABW) detained a 47-year-old man identified as "Olgierd L. from Gdańsk," a prominent figure in the criminal underworld suspected of ties to Nawrocki, state news agency PAP reported.

Investigators allege that Olgierd L., previously convicted of crimes including pimping, may have connections to neo-Nazi groups, football hooliganism and motorcycle gangs.

On December 5, 2024, Olgierd L. (C) was brought to the Lower Silesian branch of the National Prosecutor's Office in Wrocław, Poland. He was detained by the Internal Security Agency (ABW) in Gdańsk. According to a report by the onet.pl news website, Olgierd L.'s name appeared in an extensive report prepared for PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński, suggesting links between the suspect and Nawrocki.

The report suggests these connections stem from Nawrocki’s past involvement in boxing and social activities in the Baltic city of Gdańsk.

Nawrocki has denied the accusations, saying that some of the individuals mentioned in the report are people he encountered during professional activities, such as resocialization programs in prisons or at boxing gyms.

Przemysław Nowak, spokesman for the National Public Prosecutor’s Office, said on Friday that Olgierd L. is accused of participating in a criminal group, inciting violence, arson and arms trafficking.

The suspect has denied the charges and refused to testify, broadcaster TVN24 reported.
