"Lithuania should significantly strengthen military cooperation with Poland," Landsbergis told the media on Friday.

"It is time to complete the Lithuanian-Polish strategic communications infrastructure projects and significantly strengthen our military cooperation," he added.

He noted that "both countries share responsibility for the Suwałki Gap, which is one of the most sensitive points within NATO's borders."

According to the Lithuanian foreign minister, as part of building its new security strategy, Lithuania should also strengthen regional partnerships with Nordic and Baltic countries and "learn from Ukraine every day, not only from a distance, but also while being there."

Landsbergis emphasised that the United States "has been and must remain the main pillar of NATO and Lithuania's security" and that Germany, which has announced the deployment of a 5,000-strong brigade to Lithuania, "is becoming a strategic pillar of European security."

According to LandsbergisLithuania should spend 4 percent of its GDP on defence, "wake up from the pleasant stagnation of peace," and urgently take steps to strengthen its defences.

"It is necessary to prepare for the worst-case scenarios as well," he told the media.

"We must be aware that the support provided to Ukraine may not be enough for it to win the war," Landsbergis also said.

"If Ukraine is forced to negotiate with Russia, it will mean a victory for Putin ... and for Lithuania this will be the day when we start counting down to a Russian attack on another of its neighbours," he cautioned.
