PM Tusk: Poland nominates Piotr Serafin for EU Commissioner

During a press conference on Tuesday, the head of the Polish government Donald Tusl announced that Piotr Serafin has been recommended by Poland for the position of EU Commissioner.

The Polish candidate will be assessed by the parliamentary committee on European affairs before being officially nominated.

"I hope to consult the nomination of Piotr Serafin with President Andrzej Duda later this week, ideally before the August 15 holiday. The candidate will be formally proposed following a positive assessment by the parliamentary committee on European affairs," stated the Prime Minister's Office via social media.

"Mr. Piotr Serafin's candidacy for the European Commission was unanimously and enthusiastically accepted by the Council of Ministers," officially announced Donald Tusk during a meeting.

"I believe that Poland will gain a very strong position through the nomination I am proposing, and I expect the Commission President to agree with my proposal," said Prime Minister Tusk.

Donald Tusk disclosed that he has spoken with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen about Piotr Serafin’s candidacy and anticipates quick discussions with the President and Parliament. He mentioned that Serafin is expected to manage the European budget, which could offer substantial financial advantages for Poland.

Who is Piotr Serafin?

Piotr Serafin comes from Sulęcin, located in western Poland. He has academic backgrounds in both economics and law. His career includes roles as Undersecretary of State in the Office of the Committee for European Integration and Secretary of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Additionally, from 2014 to 2019, he served as Chief of Staff to Donald Tusk during his tenure as President of the European Council. The candidate for the EU Commissioner is currently serving as Poland's permanent representative to the EU.
