Established in 1981 by a unanimous United Nations resolution, Peace Day provides a "globally shared date for all humanity to commit to Peace above all differences and to contribute to building a Culture of Peace."

The 2024 theme is "Cultivating a Culture of Peace," which draws inspiration from UNESCO's foundational belief that "wars begin in the minds of men, so it is in the minds of men that the defenses of peace must be constructed," says UNESCO’s official website.

The employees of the Polish Medical Mission stress that millions of people have died as a result of armed conflicts over the years, and many lives could have been saved if help had arrived on time.

"In times of war, civilians and medical personnel lack everything. There is no electricity, no water, and no basic medical supplies or medicines. People die from diseases that would be harmless in a peaceful world," said Malwina Maria Kossela from the Polish Medical Mission.

The Polish Medical Mission estimates that between 1989 and 2022, 3.3 million people died as a result of warfare.
