Carter, a Democrat, served as president from January 1977 to January 1981 after defeating incumbent Republican Gerald Ford in the 1976 US presidential election.
He was swept from office four years later by Republican challenger Ronald Reagan.
Carter's presidency was marked by a bad economy and the Iran hostage crisis, but his achievements included brokering peace between Israel and Egypt in 1978, the Reuters news agency reported.
In 2002, he won the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his "untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development."
Carter was the longest-lived president in US history and the first to reach the age of 100.
He died at his home in Plains, Georgia on Sunday afternoon local time, Reuters reported.
