Click on the audio player above for a report by Marcin Matuszewski on Poland's appeals for ramping up offshore infrastructure security in the Baltic Sea.
In addition to Poland's Prime Minister, the event scheduled for January 14 will include participants such as NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, and European Commission Vice President Henna Virkkunen.
The conference will focus on regional security and the protection of critical underwater infrastructure. Discussions will also cover strengthening NATO's presence in the Baltic Sea and addressing threats posed by Russia's "shadow fleet" - tankers carrying Russian oil under foreign flags to circumvent EU sanctions.
The Baltic Sea has recently experienced several incidents involving the destruction of underwater energy and communication cables, including the EstLink2 and cables connecting Finland, Estonia, and Germany.
Finnish and Swedish authorities suspect that Chinese and Russian vessels, including those from the "shadow fleet," are behind these acts, which are being investigated as vandalism. In response, NATO and JEF countries have enhanced surveillance and protection of Baltic infrastructure by deploying ships, reconnaissance aircraft, and artificial intelligence for monitoring.
