Sandler arrived at the ceremony in a blue hoodie and gym shorts, prompting O’Brien to comment on his outfit during the opening monologue.

“What are you wearing?” O’Brien asked. Sandler replied, “Nobody even thought about what I was wearing until you brought it up,” before jokingly storming out, hugging Timothée Chalamet on his way.

He later claimed he was a “good person” when O’Brien questioned his lack of a suit, in a staged exchange reminiscent of a recent moment during Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to the Oval Office, where he met with Donald Trump at the White House.

According to The Independent, the skit was widely seen as a reference to a viral moment from Friday, when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, dressed in his signature military fatigues, was questioned in the Oval Office by Brian Glenn, a reporter from the conservative network Real America’s Voice.

Glenn asked why he wasn’t wearing a suit, to which Zelensky responded that he would do so when the war was over. Standing beside him, Donald Trump defended his attire, saying, “I think his outfit is great,” while Zelensky’s choice of military-style clothing - sweatshirts, cargo pants, and work boots - has become a symbol of Ukraine’s ongoing struggle.

The Oscars joke cleverly mirrored this real-life exchange, with Sandler’s outfit serving as a playful reference to the debate over formal dress codes in high-profile settings. The audience caught on to the joke, blending Hollywood satire with current geopolitical events.
