Trump suggests possible U.S. troop reduction in Europe, ties decision to trade talks

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday he does not rule out withdrawing some American troops stationed in Europe, indicating such a move could be part of broader negotiations on trade.

He also welcomed the European Union’s decision to delay immediate retaliatory tariffs after new American duties went into effect.

Asked if he plans to reduce U.S. forces in Europe, Trump responded, “I could do that,” while adding, “it depends.” He said the United States funds Europe’s defense without getting much reimbursement, likening the issue to cost-sharing questions with South Korea.

“That would be something to discuss, unrelated to trade, but I think we’ll make it part of those talks because it makes sense. It would be nice to package it all in one deal for every country,” Trump said, referencing ongoing tariff negotiations.

The president also revealed that he chose Wednesday morning to freeze higher tariffs for 90 days and drafted the order “from the heart,” without lawyers, alongside his economic advisors.

Trump also said he was happy that the EU did not immediately impose counter-tariffs.

Brussels announced a 25% tariff plan on Wednesday, but set a mid-April date for enforcement.
