The document cited by Bloomberg said that during the October 17 conversation Orban assured Putin of his loyalty and willingness to support him.

One element of that support was to organize a summit in Budapest aimed at helping end the war in Ukraine.

“Our friendship reached such a high level that I can help in every possible way,” Orban was quoted as telling Putin.

“I am at your disposal in any matter in which I could be of help,” he also said.

The reported exchange added to recent media reports of close ties between Russian and Hungarian officials, including the two countries’ foreign ministers.

Journalists have reported that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov repeatedly asked his Hungarian counterpart Peter Szijjarto for favors.

In one such call in August 2024, shortly after Szijjarto returned to Budapest from St. Petersburg, Lavrov allegedly asked him to help remove the sister of Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov from the sanctions list.

Szijjarto also regularly shared with Lavrov details of high-level European diplomatic discussions, according to reports.
