Zelensky announced the call on Telegram on Sunday evening.
"We have agreed a meeting in New York, and this meeting could change a lot", he wrote.
Interfax-Ukraina reported on Monday that the talks are planned for Sept. 21-23. Zelensky is expected to raise a ceasefire with Russia at sea and in the energy sector. Details of the meeting have not been finalised.
Zelensky said Ukraine has ideas for de-escalation and for safeguarding energy and food security and human lives. He said Kyiv is working with the US team and is ready to take very serious steps.
He also thanked Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner for visiting Kyiv in early September, saying they saw the situation for themselves.
"The path to peace is priority number one", he said.
Zelensky thanked Trump for signing the Lindsey Graham bill on Friday. The law gives the US president new powers to impose tariffs of up to 100% on the five biggest importers of Russian oil and gas, and on countries that most help Moscow evade oil restrictions. China, India, Hungary and Slovakia are among those that could be affected.
Named after the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, who initiated the effort, the law also codifies existing sanctions on Russia and encourages further measures, including against its "shadow fleet".
It calls for sanctions and tariffs to be applied within 30 days, but in practice leaves the president wide discretion over whether to use them.
