US President Donald Trump said on Saturday he was willing to invite Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to the G20 summit in Miami in December, adding that he expected the war between Ukraine and Russia to end in the “not too distant future.”

Asked at a Halloween reception at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida whether he would invite Zelensky to the summit, Trump replied: “I would. No problem.”

He also said his administration was discussing Ukraine's renewed attacks on Russian oil refineries with Kyiv.

“I think that the war between Ukraine and Russia is going to come to an end in the not too distant future,” Trump said.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said earlier on Saturday, during a news conference following a G20 foreign ministers' meeting in Atlanta, that the decision to invite Zelensky rested with Trump. He did not rule out an invitation.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has been invited to the summit, although Rubio said he did not know whether he would travel to Florida.

Zelensky has not received an invitation, but Ukraine has long expressed its readiness to attend, including for a possible trilateral meeting with Trump and Putin.

Rubio said he had briefly discussed with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov the possibility of a meeting between the leaders on the sidelines of the APEC summit in Shenzhen, China, in November.
