Poland’s Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz has said his country will focus on international humanitarian law and the protection of civilians in military conflicts during its one-month presidency of the United Nations Security Council in August.
“As a member of the Security Council, Poland shares the responsibility for the solution of the most urgent global problems,” Czaputowicz said at a meeting with foreign diplomats in Warsaw this week, as quoted by the Polish foreign ministry.
While in the United States earlier this year, Czaputowicz said that not all countries respect human rights, citing Syria as an example. He said the Syrian regime has resorted to using chemical weapons, causing civilians to suffer.
The presidency of the UN Security Council is held by each of its member countries in turn for one month.
