The Polish head of state is flying to the United States on Saturday for a five-day visit during which he is scheduled to take part in a UN General Assembly gathering and meet with Polish Americans.
“We have received an offer from the American administration for a meeting of the two presidents … on Monday in New York,” the Polish president’s chief of staff, Krzysztof Szczerski, said on Thursday, as quoted by state news agency PAP.
He added that the meeting would be coming at “the earliest possible time” after Trump last month cancelled his planned trip to Warsaw, sending Vice President Mike Pence in his place.
“That’s a good sign, showing that it is important for our partners to make sure the presidents get together as soon as possible," Szczerski said, referring to the latest proposal for face-to-face talks.
Earlier in the day, a Polish news website reported that a plan for such a bilateral meeting had been confirmed by the US Department of State.
The Wirtualna Polska news website also said that one of the topics of the talks would be a visit by Trump to Poland.
America's Pence was in Poland at the start of this month for events to mark 80 years since the start of World War II. His visit came after Trump canceled at the last minute, saying he needed to stay and monitor Hurricane Dorian as it approached the southern state of Florida.
Trump said at the time that he would be rescheduling his trip to Poland "in the near future."
Błażej Spychalski, spokesman for the Polish head of state, said in a media interview earlier this month that the details of Trump’s rescheduled trip to Warsaw were being worked out.
“Donald Trump wants to come to Poland this autumn,” Spychalski told public broadcaster Polish Radio in the interview.
America pledged to deploy around 1,000 extra troops to Poland, a staunch military ally fearful of Russia, under a declaration signed by the Polish and US presidents at the White House in June.
