After the meeting, Andrzej Duda and Kamala Harris held a joint news conference, the state PAP news agency reported.

The Polish president called for new sanctions against Moscow and asked Washington for support in helping the wave of refugees pouring into Poland from Ukraine.

Duda noted that Washington was “in the vanguard” of imposing punitive measures on Russia, and added that these sanctions “are working.”

The Polish president announced that a team of prosecutors from the International Criminal Court in the Hague have arrived in Poland. He added that there were witnesses and evidence of Russia’s war crimes in Ukraine.

Duda also reiterated Poland’s stance that the decision on whether to send fighter planes to Ukraine should be made collectively by the whole NATO alliance.

Meanwhile, the US vice president stated that Washington had supplied two batteries of the Patriot air-defence system to Poland, as a mark of its commitment to the security of NATO allies, “especially Poland.”

Harris also emphasised that the US would defend “every centimetre” of NATO territory.

She thanked Poland and its leaders for the generosity shown to people fleeing the Russian invasion of Ukraine and added that the US would provide USD 50 billion in additional humanitarian aid to Ukrainians.

Thursday is day fifteen of the Russian assault on Ukraine, which began on February 24.

Poland on Thursday reported it had accepted 1,43 million people escaping the Russian invasion.
