According to the United Nations, over 3.7 million people have escaped the Russian invasion of Ukraine, with more than 2 million pouring into Poland, De Standaard wrote at the weekend, according to the state PAP news agency.

“The biggest and fastest influx of refugees into Europe since the Second World War will affect the entire European Union, but Poland in particular,” the newspaper reported, as quoted by PAP.

‘Unprecedented solidarity’

And yet the mass migration “has not produced any hellish scenes,” thanks to “an unprecedented civic-solidarity effort in Poland,” according to De Standaard.

“Of the more than 2 million refugees who have arrived from Ukraine, a sizable proportion have found shelter with ordinary Poles,” the newspaper emphasised.

“Poland can be proud that it didn’t have to hurriedly create makeshift camps for refugees from Ukraine,” De Standaard wrote, as quoted by PAP.

Poland welcomes Ukraine refugees

Poland on Monday reported it had taken in 2.32 million refugees fleeing Russia's attack on Ukraine.

The Polish president this month signed into law a measure to offer wide-ranging support to Ukrainians escaping the Russian invasion of their country, which began on February 24.

The measure grants them legal residence in Poland and ensures access to education, healthcare and social benefits.
