Biden will travel to Europe on Saturday to attend the G7 Leaders’ Summit in Schloss Elmau in southern Germany, with plans to discuss the G7’s “unwavering support for a democratic, sovereign and prosperous Ukraine,” the White House said in a statement.
It added that G7 leaders meeting in Germany would also focus on "economic and democratic resilience, tackling the climate crisis, development infrastructure, global health security and the food and energy crisis caused by Russia’s war of aggression."
Biden will begin his visit with a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, which, a senior US official said, will be “a good opportunity for the president to check signals with Germany at the top.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to virtually join the G7 leaders to discuss “ongoing efforts to help Ukraine defend itself against Russia’s aggression.”
Zelensky will also attend NATO's Madrid summit, which is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, June 29.
During the summit, the alliance is expected to announce a new strategic concept in Eastern Europe to increase the region’s security amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
According to US officials cited by the Reuters news agency, leaders from Australia, Japan, South Korea and New Zealand will be included in the summit for the first time in a move aimed at proving that Russia's aggression against Ukraine has not detracted from Western nations’ focus on China.
