Poland’s Gen. Rajmund Andrzejczak and the EU’s Gen. Robert Brieger met at Polish Army headquarters in Warsaw on Thursday, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

The two generals held a private meeting, followed by staff discussions, officials said.

Afterwards, Brieger told reporters that the talks had focused on the war in Ukraine.

He noted Poland’s geopolitical location and NATO’s role in defending the countries on the alliance’s eastern flank. He also praised Poland's support to Ukraine as "a solidarity example in Europe."

Brieger said that EU member states must work closer together “to deter Russia and any other potential aggressors.”

“We need to increase defence budgets, but also to spend this money in a coordinated way,” he stressed.

He and Andrzejczak had spoken about developing the bloc’s defensive capabilities, regional security, the Polish Army’s involvement in foreign missions, including EU missions, and the Polish military’s role in providing logistics support to Ukraine, officials told reporters.

Later in the day, Brieger and Andrzejczak laid a wreath at Warsaw’s Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and paid tribute to Poland’s fallen independence fighters, the PAP news agency reported.

Friday is day 142 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
