Viktor Orban has given an assurance that Hungary will ratify NATO membership for Finland and Sweden

After a meeting of the Visegrad Group - Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary - Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Mazowiecki has announced Poland's success in persuading Hungary to drop its veto on NATO expansion.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has said today that Hungary's parliament will ratify NATO membership for Finland and Sweden early next year.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said, "I asked Prime Minister Orban to ratify Sweden and Finland's entry to NATO and I received a commitment that the ratification will take place in the first session of parliament in the new year."

Hungary's ratification would leave only Turkey's opposition to Sweden and Finland's NATO membership. The Washington Institute for Near East Policy opines that Turkey will probably eventually ratify Sweden and Finland's accession, but that American intervention may be needed to accelerate the process.
