Andrzej Duda hosted Salome Zourabichvili in Warsaw on Monday, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
The talks focused on the situation in central and eastern Europe, especially the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, officials said.
At a joint news conference with his guest afterwards, the Polish head of state said: “I thanked President Zourabichvili for her absolutely unequivocal stance regarding Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. From the very beginning, President Zurabishvili has expressed absolutely unquestionable, unequivocal support for Ukraine in this very difficult situation.”
Duda stressed that Poland was backing all the efforts of the international community to provide military assistance to help Ukraine defend itself against the Russian invasion.
He told reporters: “Russia must be defeated. Russia must withdraw from Ukrainian territory. This war must end with the free world defending Ukraine and helping Ukraine defend itself.”
Poland’s president also mentioned the legacy of one of his predecessors, the late Lech Kaczyński, who visited Tbilisi in 2008, at the height of the Russo-Georgian war, to back Georgia and called on Western leaders to support the Caucasian country.
Duda said on Monday: “Today, together with President Zarabsihvili, we are fully aware that we need to stand firm in defence of Ukraine.”
“President Kaczyński said at the time that if we do not stop the Russian attack on Georgia, then Ukraine will come under attack in the future,” he added.
Poland’s president stated: “This is happening today and so to avoid further wars, to prevent further aggression, this Russian aggression must be thwarted by the international community, this aggression must be repelled and today we must use all our might to help Ukraine achieve this.”
Monday is day 285 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
