Middle East regional rivals Saudi Arabia and Iran have agreed to restore diplomatic ties, seven years after severing them in a bitter row, the BBC has reported.

The unexpected announcement came after four days of talks between officials from the two countries in China, according to the British public broadcaster.

"Poland welcomes the agreement announced on the resumption of diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic of Iran and appreciates the efforts that led to this important step," the Polish foreign ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

It added that "good-neighbourly relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia are crucial to the stability of the Persian Gulf."

It also said that "the resumption of diplomatic relations between the two countries can contribute to the stability of the entire region."

Poland supports "efforts to further develop regional dialogue and ensure lasting peace and security in the Gulf region," according to the statement.

"Poland is also ready to cooperate with all actors in the region within the framework of an inclusive approach and with full transparency," the statement concluded.
