On January 22, "Russian authorities reported there had been 220 attacks on military enlistment offices" since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, the UK defence ministry said in an Intelligence Update on the Situation in Ukraine.
At the same time, Russian news outlet Mediazone "reported 113 attacks on enlistment offices" since July 26, 2023, it added. "Taken together, these statistics indicate a doubling of arson attacks on enlistment offices over the last six months."
The increase in attacks "is highly likely due to a greater sense of disaffection with the war amongst the Russian population and especially those who would be mobilised should a second wave of mobilisation be announced," the UK intelligence update said.
According to the British defence ministry, "further mobilisation would be a contradiction" to Russian President Vladimir Putin's promise at his annual news conference on December 14 that there would be "no further mobilisation" in the country.
The attacks on military enlistment offices "highly likely suggest a lack of confidence in this promise," the UK defence ministry also said.
Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, starting the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II.
Monday is day 705 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
