“I believe that the very fact that Iran attacked Israel for destroying the command of a terrorist group is an admission by Iran that it was a sponsor of those terrorists,” Sikorski told public broadcaster Polish Radio on Thursday.
The Polish foreign minister noted that Hamas possessed weaponry of Iranian origin, as did the Shiite militant groups from Yemen, known as the Houthis.
Sikorski: Iran's moves indicate terrorism sponsorship
“Iran is attempting to ensnare Israel with a network of terrorist organizations, and the core of the problem is that Iran behaves like a revolutionary movement rather than a normal state that takes care of its own interests instead of pursuing ideological goals,” Sikorski said.
He acknowledged that the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East could distract global leaders from the war in Ukraine.
“Poland supports the position of the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, regarding Iran’s attack on Israel. We are in ongoing contact with our diplomatic mission and military contingent in Lebanon,” confirmed the head of the Polish Foreign Ministry.
Sikorski added that he is in daily communication about this issue with Minister of Internal Affairs Tomasz Siemoniak and Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz.
The situation in Beirut was the subject of an “in-depth discussion” at Wednesday's Committee of the Council of Ministers for Security. We have long urged our citizens to leave Lebanon. We are also preparing various actions that I do not wish to disclose yet,” the minister stated.
Escalating Middle East conflict distracts from Ukraine war
“The situation in the Middle East is very unstable, and unfortunately, it is distracting the West and the United States, who are in the midst of an election campaign, from the Russian aggression in Ukraine,” Sikorski conveyed.
Poland has plans in this regard, including humanitarian assistance. “Once again, I urge that if someone does not have an absolute necessity to be not only in Lebanon but in the entire Middle East, now is not the time to be there,” emphasized the Foreign Minister.
Iran launches missile attack on Israel amid rising tensions
On Tuesday, October 2, Iran fired about 200 ballistic missiles at Israel in response to the deaths of Hezbollah and Hamas leaders and a commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, though most of the missiles were intercepted, and Israel has promised retaliation.
The situation in the Middle East is extremely tense, with regular shelling of northern Israel by Hezbollah and intensive bombardments of Lebanon by Israel, which could lead to the outbreak of a regional war.
