Torrential rains hit the eastern Valencia region, causing unprecedented destruction and sweeping away bridges and buildings, the Reuters news agency reported.

The death toll appeared to be the worst in Europe from flooding since 2021 when at least 185 people died in Germany, according to Reuters.

The Polish foreign ministry said in an X message: "We are deeply saddened by the news of the floods in Spain and extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the disaster."

It added: "In these difficult times, Poland stands in solidarity with the people of Spain."
