The new requirement, which initially covered citizens of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states, will soon extend to various other nationalities in a phased rollout.
Key details
- Launch date for 48 countries: January 7, 2025
- Inclusion of European states: From March 5, citizens of countries such as Poland may apply, with the ETA becoming mandatory on April 2.
- Fee: £10
- Validity: Two years (or until passport expiry); allows multiple visits of up to six months.
- Scope: Tourism, family visits, short-term business, short-term study, creative worker visas (up to three months), and transit.
Under the new rules, travelers must file their ETA applications via the “UK ETA App” or the UK government website, usually receiving approval within three working days. The digital authorization links directly to the applicant’s passport, enabling authorities to conduct pre-travel security checks and mitigate potential immigration abuses.
The British government said the new system is designed to streamline screening procedures for those visiting or transiting the UK under existing visa-free arrangements. However, holding a valid ETA does not guarantee entry. Upon arrival, the final decision rests with UK border officials.
