“Every division of the West makes us all weaker and favors those who want our civilization to decline,” Meloni said in a statement, calling for immediate talks between the United States, European nations, and allies.

Italian media noted Meloni’s close ties to both Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk, suggesting she could help mediate any transatlantic rift.

Zelensky and Trump had met on Friday for what was meant to be a routine signing of a framework agreement on Ukraine’s natural resources.

Their 45-minute Oval Office briefing grew tense when Zelensky urged the U.S. to avoid war. Trump ended the meeting abruptly, later accusing Zelensky on Truth Social of not being ready for peace “if America is involved.”

Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini echoed Trump’s stance, writing on social media: “Enough of this war. Forward, Trump.”

Opposition Democratic Party leader Elly Schlein, however, criticized Trump for aligning with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
