Poland's rail carrier PKP signs EUR 808m deal to buy high-speed engines

Poland's national railway carrier PKP has signed a contract to buy 63 high-speed engines, with an option for a further 32, for a total sum of PLN 3.5 billion (EUR 808 million), the company's biggest-ever deal.

PKP's subsidiary PKP Intercity signed the contract with the train maker Newag on Wednesday, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

Under the deal, PKP will buy 63 high-speed locomotives for PLN 2.3 billion (EUR 531 million), according to officials. 

PKP also has an option to buy additional 32 of Newag's high-speed engines, bringing the contract's value to PLN 3.5 billion (EUR 808 million), the StockWatch.pl website reported. 

This would make it PKP's biggest-ever deal for railway stock, according to the state carrier. 

PKP's new high-speed engines will travel at up to 200km/h, the PAP news agency reported.

They will come certified for use also in Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary and Slovakia, boosting PKP's international routes, according to officials.

The new high-speed locomotives are slated for delivery between 2026 and 2029, StockWatch.pl reported.
