Grave candles, traditionally used in Poland during November's All Saints' Day and All Souls’ Day to honor deceased loved ones, have also become a significant part of Polish exports.
According to the International Trade Center data, cited by Puls Biznesu, the value of Poland's exports of grave candles and candles reached 764 million euros last year.
"This represents 17 percent of the global market, meaning that one in six candles or grave candles worldwide originates from Poland," the newspaper reports.
Globally, only China surpasses Poland in this sector, with candle exports valued at 877 million euros. In Europe, following Poland are the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany.
Germany is Poland's primary trade partner for exported grave candles, purchasing one-third of the products sent abroad, valued at approximately 253 million euros. The Netherlands imports one in ten Polish grave candles and candles, with Sweden rounding out the top three.
Since the pandemic, with a rise in the number of deaths, candle sales in Poland have surged by 40 percent. Last year alone, Poles purchased 300 million grave candles, spending around 700 million PLN (161 million euros).
