A total of 439,000 crimes were registered last year, 44,000 fewer than in the previous year. The number of thefts, break-ins, and murders dropped, with car thefts becoming particularly less frequent.
However, bold robberies and assaults emerged on the streets, which negatively impacted the overall statistics. In Warsaw, a brutal murder and rape of a 25-year-old Belarusian woman took place, and in Łańcut, a businessman was tortured by attackers who scalded him with... boiling water.
Additionally, an increase in the threshold for theft from 500 to 800 PLN (117 to 188 EUR) in 2023 led some crimes to be treated as offenses rather than crimes, potentially distorting the statistics.
