NATO to invest billions in strategic fuel pipeline to Poland

NATO plans to invest billions of euros to upgrade its fuel supply system by extending an existing pipeline toward the alliance's eastern flank, including Poland, Secretary-General Mark Rutte said after the Ankara summit.

The project aims to strengthen the alliance's logistics and fuel supply capabilities in the event of a conflict.

Military planners have long argued that NATO's Cold War-era pipeline network, which currently ends in western Germany, should be extended hundreds of kilometres east to Poland and the three Baltic states.

Poland has long lobbied for the expansion, arguing that it is essential to improving the alliance's military mobility and readiness on its eastern flank.

"The project's estimated cost of EUR 27 billion is funding that still has to be secured, as NATO does not have a budget of that size at its disposal," defence analyst Marek Świerczyński told public broadcaster Polish Radio.

"So, while Poland welcomes the political green light that has been given, it’s important to realise that it will still be many years before this project becomes a reality," he added.
